Revisiting the History of One Manuscript Book Issued by Emigrant Kalmyks in 1947

Abstract
The article examines one rare manuscript book which is a school primer for children of emigrant Kalmyks that resided in Pfaffenhofen DP Camp (Germany) in the late 1940s. The paper analyzes and describes the book in detail, special attention being paid to its design and contents. The surviving copy of the primer reveals an important aspect of educational practices in the history of emigration of different peoples within DP camps and during the early years of their permanent residence in respective countries that hosted multi-ethnic expatriate groups in the aftermath of World War II.
Supporting agencies: Research was performed within a government subsidy — project ‘Socio-Political and Cultural Development of South Russia’s Peoples: a Comprehensive Research of Respective Processes’ (State Reg. No. АААА-А19-119011490038-5). The search of the alphabet book was initiated by V. G. Bezrogov, an associate of Center for Historical Studies of Pedagogy and Education (Education Development Strategy Institute, Russian Academy of Education), and Christine Lutz, an employee at Archibald S. Alexander Library (Rutgers University, NJ). The alphabet book was discovered due to efforts of N. N. Burlakov, Director of Aelita Press and a partner to the project for the establishment of the Kalmyk expatriate community’s archives (Kalmyk Archive). We extend our heartiest gratitude to those who helped discover and deliver a scan copy of the alphabet book.
